Tamil Nadu bans Maggi, three other noodle brands for three months

The Tamil Nadu government on Thursday banned Maggi and three other noodle brands for three months after excess percentage of lead was found in samples collected from across the state.

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu government on Thursday banned Maggi and three other noodle brands for three months after excess percentage of lead was found in samples collected from across the state.
An official statement said excess percentage of lead was found in the samples of Maggi noodles, Wai Wai Express noodles, Reliance Select instant noodles, Smith & Jones chicken masala noodles.

Chief minister J Jayalalithaa had ordered the food safety department to test noodles in the wake of the detection of excess percentage of MSG and lead in Maggi noodle samples in other states.
The release said the food safety department had collected 65 samples from across the state. They include 17 samples collected from shops in Chennai. “The results of the laboratory tests of seven samples has come, and we found excess percentage of lead in six samples,” the statement said.
Companies have been asked to take back the existing stocks in the market.
